Edeltraud Roller

Edeltraud Roller (born November 11, 1957 ; † June 5, 2020 ) was a German political scientist and head of the "Analysis and Comparison of Political Systems" department at the Institute for Political Science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

Live and act

Edeltraud Roller studied sociology , political science , psychology and science at the University of Mannheim . From 1983 to 1990 she worked there as a research assistant at the Collaborative Research Center 3 “Microanalytical Basis of Social Policy” and from 1989 also at the “Chair for Political Science and International Comparative Social Research”. In 1990 she did her doctorate in Mannheim on the subject of attitudes of citizens towards the welfare state of the Federal Republic of Germany .

From 1990 to 2003, Roller worked as a research assistant at the Berlin Science Center for Social Research (WZB) and helped shape the research program of the “Institutions and Social Change” department. She completed her habilitation at the Free University of Berlin in 2002 on the subject of the performance of democracies .

In September 2003 he was offered the chair for comparative political science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. With her research work on the efficiency of democratic systems, for which she also published her main work "The Performance of Democracies" , she became internationally known. From 2009 to 2018 she was also involved in the graduate school The Christian Churches Facing the Challenge of 'Europe' (1890 to the Present) .

Until 2006 she was spokeswoman for the working group “Elections and Political Attitudes” at the German Association for Political Science (DVPW) for many years .

She played a leading role in setting up the German sub-project of the European Social Survey (ESS) study for over a decade and was in charge of the sub-study “Society and Democracy in Europe”.

Until recently active in research and teaching, Edeltraud Roller died in June 2020 at the age of 62.
