Estuary of the River Eden |
The River Eden is a river in the Scottish council area of Fife .
It is created by the confluence of two streams west of Gateside near the border with Perth and Kinross and covers 48 km with a height difference of 90 m to its confluence with the North Sea . It is the more northerly of the two main rivers of Fife.
The Eden flows in an east-northeast direction and essentially follows the route of the A91 . Here it affects the localities of Auchtermuchty and Ladybank and flows through Cupar . At Guardbridge , the A91 crosses the Eden on its way to St Andrews . Beyond Guardbridge, the Eden widens to a wide, sandy estuary and finally reaches the North Sea about three kilometers north of St Andrews. The estuary was declared a nature reserve in 1978 . Kasarkas and woodcock settle there in winter .
Over its length of 48 km, the Eden has only a small difference in altitude. For this reason, its flow rate, especially below Cupar, is very slow. It has numerous tributaries, but all of them bring in only small amounts of water. The valley of Eden is considered fertile. In the past, the Eden often burst its banks. However, measures against flooding were already taken in the 19th century. At that time, trout could be found in the Eden, whereas salmon could not follow the course of the river upwards due to various dams.
