Edgars Liepiņš

Edgars Liepiņš (* 17th December 1929 in Zeltiņi, District Alūksne , Latvia ; † 13. September 1995 in Skulte , Latvia) was a Soviet and Latvian theater - and film - actors and entertainers .

Life and accomplishments

Liepiņš, who comes from the north-east of Latvia, graduated from the 1st Riga Secondary School and then the Riga Theater Institute. After graduating in 1951, he received an engagement at the youth theater, from which the State Youth Theater of the Latvian SSR emerged . Liepiņš remained connected to this house until 1989 and appeared in numerous popular works, e. B. The Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors (1952) based on Witali Gubarew, Emil und die Detektiven (1957) based on Erich Kästner , an adaptation of Charles de Coster's The Legend and the heroic, happy and glorious adventures of Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzak (1966), Peter Pan (1976) based on James Matthew Barrie , Ibsen's Peer Gynt and Ostrowski's Der Wald (both 1979).

Liepiņš was very present to a wide audience in the 1970s and 80s through his music programs and television appearances, where he performed pieces by Raimonds Pauls and Mārtiņš Brauns , among others . The dark-haired mime appeared from 1971 to 1973 as the embodiment of the character Hugo Diegs by Mirdza Ramane.

Liepiņš made his film debut in 1957 in Сын рыбака ( Syn rybaka ), an adaptation of Vilis Lācis ' novel The Fisherman's Son . By 1991, another 27 projects followed, most of which were produced in the Latvian SSR. Liepiņš gave mainly positive roles that were characterized by sincerity, humor and romance. His work also includes the literary film adaptations Amerikoniškoji tragedija based on Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy , Fairy Tales in the Night Told , based on motifs from Wilhelm Hauff's Das Wirtshaus im Spessart , and Victoria based on Knut Hamsun 's novel of the same name .

His younger brother Pēteris Liepiņš (born May 28, 1943) is also an actor. He has appeared at the Daile Theater in Riga since 1966 and is also active as a film actor. Both brothers could be heard as speakers in the cartoon Ness un Nesija: pêc Vika pasakas motiviem (1991).

Liepiņš was married three times, his wives Binuta Esernieza, Velga Vīlipa (1940-2018) and Elita Krastiņa (1954-2013) were also actresses. Like her husband, Vīlipa performed at the State Youth Theater . Liepiņš died around 3 months before his 66th birthday in Skulte and was buried in the local cemetery. Since 1999 his grave has been decorated with a sculpture by the sculptor Uldis Kurzemnieks.

In 2000 an anthology with Liepiņš 'diary entries was published.

Honors

Liepiņš was named People's Artist of the Latvian SSR in 1978 .

Since May 1996 there has been an annual evening event in memory of him, which is also connected with an award ceremony.
