history

Edgewood's history can be traced back to the Puyallup Indians who lived on the Puyallup River. Dr. William Tolmie , a Scot working for the Hudson's Bay Company, moved through Edgewood in 1833, soon after becoming chief trader at Fort Nisqually . Tolmie reached Fort Vancouver by ship from Great Britain in May 1833. Trappers with Native American women moved to the area in the 1830s, the white settlers arrived in the 1850s.

Washington's first telegraph connection ran parallel to a military road that ran through the center of what is now Edgewood. About 420 Americans (apart from the Indians) lived in what is now Pierce County in 1858 . By 1862, 681 non-indigenous people were counted as residents of Pierce County. There is evidence that the first building on North Hill (Surprise Lake) was a one-room wooden house that ran School District 27 in 1891 . One of the first settlers in Edgewood known by name was Peter Nyholm (1895).

The first official trip on the Tacoma-Seattle City Line, which ran through the valley, took place in October 1902. The State Spiritualists , represented by six churches in western Washington, held a summer camp in Edgewood in 1903. Construction of a campsite with permanent accommodation began in 1927, but was destroyed by fire in 1948 before it was completed.

Edgewood was officially recognized as a local authority on February 28, 1996.
