Edmund Eugen Friedrich Nüsperli (born July 23, 1838 in Waldenburg , Canton Basel-Landschaft , † June 9, 1890 in Aarau ) was a Swiss mechanic and factory inspector .

life and work

Nüsperli was the second oldest son of Friedrich Nüsperli and Barbara, nee Grundbacher. His aunt Nanny Nüsperli married Heinrich Zschokke . His grandfather was Jakob Nüsperli .

After finishing schools in Waldenburg and Aarau, Nüsperli completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic in Gelterkinden . He then worked at JJ Rieter & Cie Maschinenfabrik in Töss near Winterthur, which was founded by Johann Jacob Rieter (1762–1826) . Later Nüsperli took further training in Paris , London and Greewich and studied the working conditions in the factories there. Nüsperli returned to Switzerland in 1865, where he initially worked for Caspar Honegger . In 1867 he and the engineer Schnider opened a mechanical engineering workshop in La Neuvevill . From 1875 to 1878 he held the post of deputy mayor of the municipality.

Nüsperli campaigned for the Swiss factory law . This law was created in response to an investigation into the working and living conditions of factory workers, which had shown catastrophic conditions. The law introduced a normal working day of eleven hours, banned child labor and regulated the liability of employers in the event of accidents and occupational diseases.

Together with Fridolin Schuler and Wilhelm Klein , Nüssli was elected by the Federal Council in 1878 as one of the first three federal factory inspectors.

As factory inspector, Nüsperli was responsible as an enforcement organizer and designer of protective devices for French-speaking Switzerland. From 1882 also for the cantons of Lucerne, Solothurn, Basel-Stadt, Baselland, Schaffhausen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Aargau, Thurgau and Bern. Nüsperli presented guidelines for the factory construction and dealt in detail with the combat phosphorus - necrosis . He is considered the Swiss pioneer in accident prevention.

Nüsperli was married to Ida Luisa, nee Witz († 1926). She was the daughter of the notary Friedrich Emanuel Witz, who came from Erlach. He was the owner of the Witzwil domain .
