Edoardo Vesentini (born May 31, 1928 in Rome , † March 28, 2020 in Pisa ) was an Italian mathematician and politician .

Life

Vesentini obtained his diploma ( Laurea ) in 1950 from the University of Milan and received his doctorate in 1956 in Rome in geometry. 1957/58 he was a lecturer at Northwestern University and 1958/59 at the Institute for Advanced Study . In 1959 he became professor of geometry at the University of Pisa and from 1967 professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. From 1968 to 1970 he was its vice director and from 1978 to 1987 the director. After retirement in 1996 he was a professor at the Turin Polytechnic . He was a visiting scholar at Harvard University (1963-64), at the IHES (1961, 1967), at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (1965), at the Cairo University , the University of Istanbul , at the University of Maryland (1971, 1980) and at the Research Institute for Mathematics in Zurich (1968).

Vesentini dealt with complex analysis (several complex variables), differential geometry and functional analysis .

From 1977 to 1985 he was President of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica Francesco Severi . From 1966 to 1974 he was on the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union .

From 1987 to 1992 he was an Italian senator .

He was a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 1979 and a full member since 1988 , of which he was President in 1997. In 1979 he became a corresponding member of the Istituto Lombardo and in 1995 a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Turin. Since 1997 he was a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei XL (today's Accademia Nazionale delle Scienze ). He was a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a member of the Academia Europaea .

In 1956 he received the Pomini Prize , 1959 the Bonavera Prize , 1962 the Premio Caccioppoli , 1975 the gold medal of the Società Italiana per il Progresso delle Scienze , 1981 the Feltrinelli Prize , and he was a Grand Officer of the order " Al Merito della Repubblica ". He was an honorary doctor from the University of Tübingen . In 1966 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow (subject: Rigidity of quotients of bounded symmetric domains).

He died in Pisa in March 2020 at the age of 91.
