Eduard Bechteler

Eduard Bechteler (born January 6, 1890 in Munich , † August 31, 1983 in Mindelheim ) was a German painter and sculptor.

Private career

Eduard Bechteler was born in Munich in 1890 as the son of Theodor Bechteler. After the birth, the father moved back to his hometown Immenstadt. Edward's siblings were born there: his brothers Andreas (* 1900) and Theo (* 1903) as well as his sister Elsa Anna (* 1910). His younger brother Theo Bechteler (born February 8, 1903 in Immenstadt , † June 22, 1993 in Augsburg ) also started an artistic career like him.
Bechteler learned wood turning from his father, but painted diligently in his spare time. He exhibited his first pictures in his parents' company from 1912 and the following years. In 1916 he became a recruit in Lindau.
During a stay in Paris he met the sculptor Ruth Zachrisson, married her and moved with her to Sweden in 1933 . There he built a studio house on the Ångermanälven river and the Nämforsen rapids in Ådalsliden with the Villa Edelweiß according to his own design, which he expanded into a permanent art gallery in 1936, which was well attended. In 1943 he finally became a Swedish citizen. After his wife's death in 1949, he was married to Eva Hildegard Hornemann from 1953 to 1957 and then returned to Germany in 1975 after meeting his third wife, Marianne Geiger from Türkheim, on Capri . There he died at the age of 93 in Mindelheim in 1983 .

Artistic career

In 1920 Bechteler was admitted to the Munich Art Academy . He became a student of Peter von Halm , Max Doerner , Angelo Jank and Wilhelm von Zügel. From 1923 he painted Allgäu landscapes, motifs from Holland and the Baltic Sea. He also created memorial plaques and memorial stones for the city of Immenstadt and fountains for Sonthofen . However, he painted his best pictures in Sweden - landscapes, people and animals. He also created animal sculptures on the side.
