biography

Private career

Bechteler was born as the youngest son of Theoder Bechteler (* 1861, † 1911) and eight siblings. In addition to him, the older brother Eduard Bechteler (* 1890 in Munich , † 1983 in Mindelheim ) embarked on an artistic career. In 1932 Theo Bechteler married Elfriede Kristeleit from Königsberg , with whom he had four children. Mention should be made of his daughter Else Bechteler-Moses (* 1933 in Berlin , painter and carpet artist) and his son Christoph Bechteler (* 1935 in Berlin, metal sculptor). In the same year he moved to Berlin-Gatow, where he lived until the end of the war in 1945. After another move, back to his hometown Immenstadt and staying for several years, the last change of residence came in 1955, due to his frequent presence there, finally to Augsburg ; Bechteler lived there until his death in 1993.

Professional background

After finishing school in Immenstadt, he completed an apprenticeship in wood carving in Oberammergau from 1920 to 1922 and studied sculpture at the United State Schools for Free and Applied Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. During his studies, Bechteler received a three-year scholarship stay in Paris around 1929 . After his professional years in Berlin and Immenstadt, he was appointed to Augsburg in 1955, where he entered the building art sector . This was followed by orders from the city of Augsburg resp. of the regional building authority Augsburg. In addition, there were orders from the Catholic Church and from private parties.

Working during National Socialism

With his works (only a few have survived from this period, e.g. a striding pair of lovers ), Bechteler, an aspiring artist in the early 1930s, attracted the hostility of the National Socialists . This was followed by a de facto exhibition ban, with a few exceptions, until the end of the war. During this time he hired himself as a craftsman.
