Eduard Brenner (English studies)

Johann Wilhelm Eduard Brenner (born October 4, 1888 in Munich , † July 16, 1970 in Oberaudorf ) was a German English professor and university lecturer. From 1951 to 1954 he was State Secretary in the Bavarian Ministry of Culture in the Ehard III cabinet .

biography

After attending school, Eduard Brenner studied at the universities of Munich and Würzburg from 1907 to 1912 and was awarded a doctorate in Würzburg. phil. PhD. After a short stay abroad in England and after the First World War, he initially taught as a lecturer at the Nuremberg University of Economics and Social Sciences . In 1926 he took over the management of the Nuremberg Adult Education Center and received a professorship for English at the University of Economics and Social Sciences . As a result of the National Socialists coming to power, he was dismissed in 1933. After the end of the Second World War, he was full professor of English and American studies from 1945 to 1955, held office as rector of the Nuremberg University of Economics and Social Sciences until 1948 and, at the same time, of the University of Erlangen from 1946 to 1948 .

Brenner was initially a member of the SPD and was a member of the Nuremberg City Council. From 1951 to 1954 he was State Secretary in the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture. He later joined the DFU , as their Bavarian top candidate he ran unsuccessfully in the 1961 federal election. Brenner headed the Oberaudorf group of university professors who were close to the GEW and SPD from 1950 to 1959. He was replaced by Eugen Fink .
