Eduard Eichens

Friedrich Eduard Eichens (born May 27, 1804 in Berlin ; † May 5, 1877 there ) was a German engraver .

Career

At the art academy in his hometown, Eichens u. a. Student of Ludwig Buchhorn . With the support of his teacher, Eichens later went to Paris for some time to study painting at the École des Beaux-Arts and to meet the old masters in the Louvre . Then Eichens went to Italy and became a student of Paolo Toschi in Parma . After his return, Eichens settled back in Berlin as a freelance artist. Later he was entrusted with a teaching position at the art academy as professor of copperplate engraving.

Three weeks before his 73rd birthday, Friedrich Eduard Eichens died on May 5, 1877 in Berlin.

His younger brother Philipp Hermann Eichens (1813–1886) also worked as a copperplate engraver and lithographer, while his daughter Anna Eichens worked as a flower and fruit painter.

Artistic work

Novalis

Eichens mainly created portraits of famous contemporaries, some based on templates, such as the powerful steel engraving that he designed in 1845 for the edition of works by Friedrich von Hardenberg (Novalis) .

In addition, he often addressed ecclesiastical and historical topics. Among other things , he created several sheets after Wilhelm von Kaulbach's wall paintings in the Neues Museum in Berlin and from his Shakespeare gallery.
