August Ferdinand Hopfgarten (* 17th March 1807 in Berlin , † 26. July 1896 ) was a German portrait , genre and fresco - painter .

August Ferdinand Hopfgarten studied from 1820 at the Berlin Academy with Heinrich Anton Daehling , Johann Gottfried Niedlich and Wilhelm Wach . The Academy Prize of 1825 enabled him to spend five years in Rome from 1827 to 1833. After his return, he established himself as a portrait and genre painter. He took part in the stereochrome painting of the palace chapel of the Berlin City Palace and in the hero paintings in the north dome hall of the Neues Museum . In 1854 he became a professor and member of the Berlin Academy.

August Ferdinand Hopfgarten died on July 26, 1896 at the age of 89 in Berlin and was buried in the local cathedral cemetery I on Liesenstrasse . The grave has not been preserved.
