In 2003, at the age of 56, his wife had an accident while exercising on the climbing wall of the Alpine Center Rudolfshütte in Uttendorf (Pinzgau). Both were certified mountain guides, as was the younger son Reinhard.

His most important success was in 1978 the first ascent of the southeast face of the 8201 meter high Cho Oyu together with Alois Furtner , the ascent was done entirely in alpine style . He was considered one of the most successful Austrian expedition mountaineers.

In the summer of 2014 he sold his shares in the mountain woodpeckers to a German company active in the same industry, but remained active as a consultant.

Koblmüller led a group of nine on a ski expedition that set off on April 10, 2015 to the 5047 m high Kasbek in the Caucasus . When a snowstorm came during one of the marching stages, seven of the mostly Austrian group members were able to take refuge in a refuge and remained well. The mountain guide supported a 59-year-old Austrian who both got caught in the blizzard. They were only found frozen to death on the afternoon of April 16, 2015. Their bodies were then recovered with a helicopter from an altitude of 4,700 m.
