Appreciation of political activity

Moll's 21-year term in office, to this day the second longest of a Mannheim mayor, was characterized by the extremely dynamic development of the city. From 1871 to 1890 the population increased from 39,600 to 79,058.

Moll promoted the economy by campaigning for the necessary infrastructure. So he was able to open the Mühlauhafen in 1875 and the inland port in 1887. The main train station was relocated and inaugurated in its current location in 1876. He was also committed to the Rhine Valley Railway , which was built as a direct rail link to Karlsruhe via Rheinau, Schwetzingen and Hockenheim.

Moll also had the basic supply in mind. In 1880 he submitted a report on the construction of the new gas works in Mannheim . In 1889 the water tower , today the town's landmark, was completed and a central drinking water supply was built for the first time. With the choice of the location, the expansion of the city to the east was initiated.

Moll also developed the promotion of the poor and education. In 1863 the first secondary school for girls was opened, and in 1870 the first mixed denominational school was opened.

Honors

Eduard Moll has received numerous awards for his life's work. In 1875 he was awarded the Knight's Cross 1st Class and in 1891 the Commander's Cross 2nd Class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion . In the same year he was the first head of Mannheim to be honored with honorary citizenship . A street in the eastern part of the city was named after him, as was a school in 1900. The Moll-Gymnasium in Niederfeld goes back to this .
