Eduard Carl August Riehm (born December 20, 1830 in Diersburg , † April 5, 1888 in Giebichenstein ) was a German Protestant theologian .

Life

The son of the pastor Heinrich Isaak Riehm attended the education center in Pforzheim after initial private lessons with his father . In 1845 he moved to the grammar school in Ludwigsburg , from where he switched to the University of Heidelberg after obtaining his higher education entrance qualification , in order to start studying theology in autumn 1848. In Heidelberg he attended the lectures of Carl Christian Ullmann (1796-1865) and Karl Bernhard Hundeshagen , studied from Easter 1850 to 1852 at the theological faculty in Halle , where he was strongly influenced by Hermann Hupfeld . After completing his studies, he went back to Heidelberg, where he attended the seminary from Easter 1852 .

After passing the exam on July 1, 1853, he obtained a licentiate in theology on December 17 , became city vicar in Durlach in December 1853 , was garrison preacher in Mannheim in August 1854 and completed his habilitation on June 14, 1858 in the subject of theology of the Old Testament at the University of Heidelberg . There, Riehm worked as the second teacher at the seminary, lectured on the exegesis of the Old and New Testaments and held the position of second university preacher . In Heidelberg he was appointed associate professor on June 3, 1861. On April 30, 1862, he was offered a full professorship at the University of Greifswald, but at Hupfeld's instigation he went to Halle in the same capacity on August 11, 1862, and became full professor of theology there after Hupfeld's death in 1866.

In 1881 he was rector of the Halle Alma Mater . He had been a member of the Evangelical Saxon Provincial Synod since 1878 , and was chairman of the same and of the Old Prussian General Synod in 1885 . In addition, he took part as an editor of the journal Theologische Studien und Richter and had worked for the Halle commission for the revision of Luther's Bible translation since 1865. He turned down honorable appointments at the universities of Leipzig, Kiel and Heidelberg as well as the office of general superintendent of West Prussia .

Riehm died of a heart and kidney disease. He was buried in Halle's Stadtgottesacker .

Riehm is seen as a mediator theologian between strictly scientific and church interests. He tried to act with an incorruptible sense of truth in scientific questions and developed a simple, sincere piety. So he tried to unite the practical goals of the Evangelical Church.

His first marriage was on April 19, 1855 with Elise Löschcke (born November 4, 1833 in Dresden, † December 11, 1866 in Giebichenstein), the daughter of a Dresden wine merchant. His second marriage was on March 31, 1869 with Anna Braune (born May 15, 1850 in Köslin; † March 29, 1936 in Halle (Saale)), the daughter of the Halle post director.
