Wilhelm August Eduard von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach ( English Prince William Augustus Edward of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach , born October 11, 1823 in Bushy Park , London , † November 16, 1902 in London) was Prince of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach as well as British field marshal .

Life

Eduard was a son of Duke Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (1792-1862) from his marriage to Ida (1794-1852), daughter of Duke Georg I von Sachsen-Meiningen . His mother's sister was Queen Adelaide of Great Britain .

Eduard married November 27, 1851 in London in morganatic marriage Lady Augusta Gordon-Lennox (1827-1904), daughter of Charles Gordon-Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond . The marriage of inclination had the express goodwill of Edward's father. The Grand Duke of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach awarded the bride the title of "Countess of Dornburg" and Queen Victoria the title of "Princesse Eduard of Saxe-Weimar". In 1866, Queen Victoria granted both of them the title of Royal Highness . The marriage remained childless.

Eduard lived in Great Britain almost all of his life. He attended the Royal Military College at Sandhurst , enlisted in the British Army in 1841 and participated in several battles in the Crimean War as Colonel in the Grenadier Guards . He became an adjutant to the British Queen. In 1868 he was promoted to major-general , in 1877 to lieutenant-general and in 1879 to general . From 1870 to 1876 he was General Officer Commanding of the Home District, 1878 to 1883 of the Southern District and from 1885 to 1890 Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces in Ireland . In 1890 he retired from active military service and became Honorary Colonel of the 10th Regiment of Foot and the 1st Life Guards . In 1897 he was raised to the rank of field marshal. He was the recipient of numerous orders and awards. He died of appendicitis in 1902 and was buried in Chichester Cathedral.
