Ida Caroline von Sachsen-Meiningen (born June 25, 1794 in Meiningen , † April 4, 1852 in Weimar ) was a princess of Sachsen-Meiningen and by marriage Princess of Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach .
Life
Ida Caroline was the second daughter of Duke Georg I of Saxony-Meiningen (1761-1803) from his marriage to Luise Eleonore (1763-1837), daughter of Prince Christian Albrecht von Hohenlohe-Langenburg . Ida's older sister Adelheid later became Queen of the United Kingdom. Her younger brother Bernhard has been Duke of Saxony-Meiningen since 1803. Ida had a very close relationship with her siblings throughout her life.
Ida and her sister were brought up in a Christian humanitarian manner by the court chaplain Georg Karl Friedrich Emmrich , under the supervision of their father and later their mother. Together with her mother and sister, she made a living in the war years 1814/15 by providing for soldiers.
She married on May 30, 1816 in Weimar Prince Karl Bernhard von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (1792-1862), who served as a general in the Netherlands and whom she followed in the following years to his various types of garrison. However, she spent the summers in Liebenstein and Altenstein Castle . In Altenstein she also spent the time when her husband was on his North American trip. In 1830 she and her children attended the coronation of her brother-in-law Wilhelm IV in London. In 1836 Ida moved into the Princely House in Liebenstein as a permanent summer residence. Because of her popularity and charitable work, Ida was very popular with the population.
She died of pneumonia. Her last words were: " But I hope to sleep well tonight ". She was buried in the Weimar Princely Crypt.
Her brother erected the so-called Ida monument below the Liebenstein castle ruins in 1854 , which was extensively renovated in 2004.
