Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield KCB DCL FRS (born March 27, 1820 in Cheltenham , † September 5, 1894 in London ) was a British admiral and polar explorer .

Life

Inglefield joined the Royal Navy in 1834 and was a graduate of the Royal Naval College in Portsmouth . In 1840 he took part in naval exercises in Sidon in what is now Lebanon part and then found uses in units of the Royal Navy in South America , where he served as commander of HMS Comus on the Río Paraná for Commander was promoted.

In 1852 he went to Barrowstrasse on behalf of Lady Jane Franklin to take part in the search for the British polar explorer John Franklin in the area of ​​the Queen Elizabeth Islands and to bring relief supplies to the squadron located there . He then examined the northern shores of Baffin Bay . In 1852 he named Ellesmere Island after Francis Egerton, 1st Earl of Ellesmere .

On August 16, it reached Upernavik and entered Smithsund (to 78 ° 28 '21' ' north latitude ). John Ross had claimed that the road there was enclosed by mountains, but Inglefield found it open and thus pointed the right way for all subsequent expeditions . He also included the Jonessund up to 84 ° 10 ' west longitude .

In 1853 and 1854 he set out again to pick up stranded crews at Beechey Island and bring them back to Great Britain.

In 1875 Inglefield, who was Superintendent of the shipyards on Malta ( Malta Dockyards ) from 1872 to 1877 , was promoted to Vice Admiral. He was then from 1878 to 1879 Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy in North America .

Inglefield received the gold medal from the Royal Geographical Society in London for his achievements and was also a Fellow of the Royal Society . In addition, he became Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and from then on carried the suffix "Sir".

Sir Edward August Inglefield died in London on September 5, 1894.
