Edward C. Kurtz Jr.
Edward Charles Kurtz, Jr. (born January 30, 1946 in New Orleans , Louisiana - † January 12, 2013 ) was an American documentary filmmaker , author and university lecturer .
Life
Edward "Eddie" Kurtz came from New Orleans and attended Jesuit High School there; He received his Bachelor of Arts in literature from the University of Notre Dame , then a Master of Arts in broadcast and film production from San Francisco State University . From the 1960s he worked as a documentary filmmaker for local public television and as a writer of works on the culture of the city of New Orleans. As an adjunct professor , he taught at Xavier University .
His television documentaries include The Danny Barker Show , a biography of jazz musician Danny Barker , This Cat Can Play Anything about legendary banjo player Manny Sayles, and Piano Players , a documentary about three generations of New Orleans pianists. In the film Which Governs Best he analyzed the role of the US government in the last century. As a freelance writer, he worked on the television series Real New Orleans . His books include August in New Orleans, 1968, Singing for Supper, and My Casanova . Kurtz was also a founding member of the Tipitina’s venue and the New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC); he was also active on numerous social and educational committees.
