Edward Mortimer CMG (born December 22, 1943 in Burford , Oxfordshire ) is a British journalist and former UN official.

Life

Edward Mortimer studied Modern History at Balliol College , Oxford, where he received his PhD in DLitt. He is married to the British artist Elizabeth Mortimer. He worked as a foreign correspondent for The Times , focusing on the Middle East and the Mediterranean region. He became a columnist at the Financial Times , where he was head of foreign affairs from 1987 to 1998. He then worked until 2006 as director of communications in the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York. Since then he has worked as a senior advisor at the organization of the Salzburg Seminar and at the non-profit advisory organizations Independent Diplomat and Institute for Historical Justice and Reconciliation (IHJR) in The Hague . Mortimer is a Fellow of All Souls College Oxford.

In addition to his journalistic work, Mortimer has published several monographs on international politics.

Mortimer was named Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 2010.
