Efisio Cugia (born April 27, 1818 in Cagliari , † February 12, 1872 in Rome ) was an Italian general and politician .

He came from a respected aristocratic family in Sardinia , was trained at the Artillery School in Turin and was promoted to artillery lieutenant in 1834 . He fought with distinction in 1848 at Goito and in 1849 at Novara , became a captain , in 1855 a major , served as a lieutenant colonel in the general staff in 1859 and won special trust in Camillo Benso von Cavours , after whose death he became undersecretary of state in the war ministry of the Ricasoli cabinet . In this position, distinguished by great business acumen, he actually headed the ministry independently until he stepped down in August 1861.

In 1862 he was appointed Prefect of Palermo and charged with the political management of the whole island, but with the progress of the Garibald expedition he was recalled as too moderate. From 1863 to 1864 he was naval minister and from 1865 to 1866 war minister; In 1866 he fought with distinction at Custozza and then became an adjutant and soon a trusted friend of Crown Prince Umberto .
