from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Egidy , also Aegidi , Aegidi , Aegidius and Egidi , is a predominantly Dutch, Flemish and German surname derived from the male given name Egidius . According to tradition within the family , members of this family emigrated from the Spanish Netherlands to other European countries . A reliable proof of the genealogical connection of the bourgeois family with the noble family von Egidy has not been provided one hundred percent, but is obvious due to its progenitor.

Name bearer in the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation

In German-speaking countries, the first name Aegidius has also been used as a family name since the late Middle Ages. In the Liebenwerda office , to which the later manor Ottersitz belonged to the Egidy family, who had been raised to the nobility, a pastor with this family name was recorded as early as 1533. There was also a pastor with this name in the Borna office in 1627/33.

Bearer of the name in the Spanish Netherlands

Members of the historic Dutch family held a number of high offices and are counted among the patrician class :

Other namesake with the surname Aegidi can be found in various genealogical trees , especially up to the 17th century in what is now Belgium .

For the imperial master master Albert Aegidij and his descendants from Belgium, the nobility was confirmed by the emperor on October 1, 1715 on the basis of a corresponding request and his coat of arms improved. He cited the fact that his ancestors came from the Spanish Netherlands and remained true to the Roman Catholic religion .

Emigration to German countries

The reasons for the emigration of the Egidy family are probably due to the strong Dutch settlement movement in the former Prussian provinces , but also to religious reasons, as Protestants in the Spanish Netherlands were under great pressure due to the prevailing Catholicism there .

There is evidence that a group of Dutch immigrants emigrated to the area of the Hanseatic city of Elbing . From 1628 onwards, several AE (E) gidi are listed in the registers of the grammar school in Elbing, which was founded in 1535 under a Dutch rector . There is also a document from a Johann Friedrich Aegidi, war council from Danzig .
