Erhard Egidi (born April 23, 1929 in Rheinsberg ; † September 8, 2014 in Hanover ) was a German church musician . From 1972 to 1991 he was cantor of the Neustädter Church in Hanover .

Life

He comes from the Egidi family and studied at the church music school in Spandau with Gottfried Grote , Ernst Pepping and Herbert Schulze . From 1954 to 1972 he was cantor at St. Lamberti, Hildesheim .

From 1972 he was cantor at the Neustädter Church and was later appointed church music director. In his first concert with the St. Johannis Choir, he conducted Bach's Missa in A and Mozart's Vesperae solennes de confessore . He played concerts for keyboard instruments, for example Bach's Goldberg Variations on the harpsichord, music for clavichord such as a Sonata by Friedrich Wilhelm Rust , and Bach's Clavier-Exercise III with his wife Maria on two organs. Every autumn he went on a concert tour with the choir with an a cappella program. In 1980 he gave a concert in the Marktkirche in Wiesbaden with Leonhard Lechner's motet Oh God, I am complaining to you , Bach's motet The Spirit Helps Our Weaknesses and Pepping's Missa Dona nobis pacem . Other travel destinations included Copenhagen (1972), Paris (1973), Strasbourg (1979) and Vaduz (1987), but mainly small towns without choirs.

Egidi founded the St. Johannis Chamber Orchestra , which mainly consisted of teachers and students from the Hanover University of Music , to participate in choral concerts and for their own concerts. On June 11, 1983, he conducted Bach's B minor Mass for the Kirchentag . In 1986 he performed Stravinsky's Canticum sacrum and Ein deutsches Requiem von Brahms together, and in 1988 he conducted Stravinsky's Cantata with Mozart's Great Mass in C minor . In November 1990 he performed the funeral music of the first organist of the Neustadt church, Johann Anton Coberg , which had been lost for 300 years. He created performance material from the recovered score and combined the music in a concert on November 25, 1990 with Bach's motet Come, Jesus, come , his cantata Wachet up, calls us the voice , BWV 140 , and Stravinsky's psalm symphony . In the last choir concert before retirement, Egidi conducted Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1991 , with Dantes Diwiak as Evangelist , Anselm Richter as Vox Christi , Monika Frimmer , Ralf Popken and Joachim Gebhardt. Hugo Thielen's review emphasized dramatic drive and concentrated performance.

Egidi composed choral works for church services, some of which were published by Carus-Verlag .
