Eildert Groeneveld

Eildert Groeneveld (born May 12, 1948 in Emden , East Friesland) is a German agricultural scientist and animal breeder; he was director and professor at the Institute for Farm Animal Genetics at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute and head of the research area Breeding and Genetic Resources in Neustadt / Mariensee (Mariensee).

Live and act

Groeneveld studied agriculture in Göttingen with a specialization in animal breeding, where he obtained a Dr. sc. agr. and then worked as a scientist at what was then the Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Behavior of the Federal Research Center for Agriculture in Mariensee, where he became head of the research area Genetics and Animal Breeding .

From 1987 to 1990 he held the position of Tenured Associate Professor for Computer Applications in Animal Agriculture at the Department of Animal Sciences, University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, USA. He was then called back to the Marienseer Institute, in January 1991 director and professor and in March 2008 - still as head of the research area Breeding and Genetic Resources - deputy head of the newly assigned Institute for Farm Animal Genetics within the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut Riems. In August 2013, Groeneveld took age-related retirement.

Research engagements

His scientific work was extremely extensive and successful and mainly concerned the use of modern information technologies in animal breeding. Numerous IT programs in the field of animal breeding and genetic diversity go back to Eildert Groeneveld.

He has documented his scientific results in 135 original publications, 214 conference contributions and 161 lectures in Germany and abroad.

Eildert Groeneveld is or was a member of numerous renowned national and international scientific societies, e.g. B. the German Society for Breeding Science , the German Society for Animal Science , the American Dairy Science Association , the Association of Animal Science.

  • Organizing committee of the 9th World Congress on "Genetics Applied to Livestock Production (WCGALP)" (2000 in Leipzig)
  • "Advisor Committee of the Department of Agriculture Production, Food Science and Technology" of the Cyprus University of Technology , Limassol / Cyprus

From 1999 to 2001 he was Chairman of the FAO Panel of Experts Developing the Global Strategy for the Management of Farm Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) as well as long-standing specialist advisor to the federal and state animal breeding officers
