Eileen Bennett Whittingstall (born July 16, 1907 in London , † August 18, 1979 ) was a British tennis player from England . In her career from 1927 to 1931 she won three titles each in mixed and women's doubles at Grand Slam tournaments .

life and career

Bennett Whittingstall reached the final of the French tennis championships (now the French Open ) in 1928 , but lost to Helen Wills Moody in straight sets with 1: 6, 2: 6. Three years later (1931) she lost again to Moody in the final of the US tennis championships (today US Open ) in women's singles, also in two sets with 4: 6, 1: 6.

She was much more successful in the doubles competitions. She won with Phoebe Holcroft Watson in 1928 and with Betty Nuthall Shoemaker in 1931 in Paris . In 1932, she and Shoemaker lost the final to Moody and Elizabeth Ryan .

Whittingstall reached the final of the Wimbledon Championships in 1928 with Ermyntrude Harvey . But they lost against Phoebe Holcroft Watson and Peggy Saunders in two sets with 2: 6, 3: 6. With Betty Shoemaker, she won the 1931 tournament 6: 2, 6: 4 against Helen Jacobs and Dorothy Round . With the French Henri Cochet , Eileen Bennett Whittingstall defeated Helen Wills Moody and Frank Hunter in mixed doubles competition in 1928 and 1929 . In the following year (1930) the British lost with Cochet the final against the US-American Bill Tilden and the German Cilly Aussem . Whittingstall and Cochet also won the mixed doubles title at the 1927 US Championships against Hazel Wightman and René Lacoste . The result was 6: 2, 6: 0, 6: 3.

Eileen Bennett Whittingstall was in the top 10 of the tennis world rankings in 1928, 1929, 1931 and 1932. In 1931 she achieved the highest ranking with third place.

The British woman was married to the painter Edmund Fearnley Whittingstall.
