Eilert Köhler (* around 1710 in Burhave ; † 1751 ) was a German organ builder . He worked mainly in the county of Oldenburg . Its only surviving organ in the Kreuzkirche Suhl is also the largest organ in southern Thuringia .

life and work

Little is known about his life and work. Köhler was born around 1710 in Burhave in the Butjadinger Land (then Grafschaft Oldenburg ) in March or April. It is unknown where and from whom he learned organ building. His subsequent years of traveling took him to Thuringia, as indicated by influences in his new building in Suhl . The organ in the Kreuzkirche Suhl has 39 registers and combines North German and Thuringian influences in a unique synthesis. It was built between 1738 and 1740 and was completely overhauled up to and including May 2007.

Inside the Suhl organ was the inscription:

“I Eilertus Köhler, born in the city and Indinger Land, from the county of Oldenburg and Dalmenhorst, the place where I was born is called Burhave, by God's decree, I created this organ on April 4th in 1738 and September 26th in 1740 by God's grace made and immediately traveled home again. And I was also single when I was quite young. Written in Suhla on the town hall. "

After the new building in Suhl, Köhler received a concession to build organs in Oldenburg and Delmenhorst at a young age (1741), which brought him back to his homeland. New buildings were built here in Oldenburg / St. Nikolai (1742), Tettens (1742–1744) and Hatten (1744). The new building that began in Apen (1750–1751) was completed by Johann Hinrich Klapmeyer . The prospectus of the organ in Tettens (1744) and the pedal mechanism of the two-manual Schnitger organ in Dedesdorf (1742–1745), which Köhler added, have been preserved from Köhler's workshop .

Köhler married on July 22, 1749 and lived with his wife until his death at Oldenburger Gaststrasse 16. After Köhler's death, the Danish king granted Johann Hinrich Klapmeyer, who married Köhler's widow, the privilege. Köhler is assigned to the Schnitger School, even if he was not a direct student of the Hamburg master.
