action

At the book fair in Rennes , defense lawyer Pierre Solal is introduced to the writer Elsa Santorini. Pierre has been married for 15 years and has two children. He is happy with his family. Elsa is the mother of three children and has just separated from her much younger friend, the writer Hugo. Pierre and Elsa get on very well, but Pierre does not want to endanger his marriage and Elsa does not want to break her resolution never to start an affair with a married man. They both meet again by chance at a party some time later. They flirt with each other, dance together and eventually kiss. Nevertheless, at the end of the evening they deliberately do not exchange phone numbers. Pierre briefly imagines how an affair with Elsa would go on, how both would meet in a hotel, how his wife would find out and the marriage would eventually end in divorce.

Pierre sees Elsa, who is in a custody battle, again shortly afterwards in court. He imagines how they would both see each other and finally kiss. In reality, both pass each other without Elsa noticing him. Pierre and Elsa meet again at the party of their mutual friend Julien. Pierre has appeared with his wife Anne, Elsa again unceremoniously pretends to Pierre that she and her ex-boyfriend Hugo are actually still a couple. Elsa later manages to get Pierre's cell phone number. Both of them now text each other occasionally, even if Pierre is aware of the danger of the situation. Elsa goes to the lawyers' ball with her boyfriend Marc because she knows that Pierre will be there too. Pierre and Elsa are interrupted in their conversation by a friend of Pierre who thinks Elsa is his wife. Pierre weighs it down and Elsa leaves the event hastily.

Once again, coincidence brings both of them together: he represents a case in London while she is presenting her new book in town. Both check in at the same hotel and take rooms on the same floor. They arrange to meet for the evening they spend at a wedding to which they invite themselves. They have a lot of fun together and end up in Elsa's room. After a short time they are disturbed by the phone ringing: Elsa's daughter calls. While Elsa is on the phone, Pierre leaves the room. He wants to end the affair that has not really started yet.

During the plot, Pierre saw a film about the quantum universe, in which things don't have to stay in one place, but can be in several places at the same time. It turns out that although Pierre and Elsa were introduced to each other at the book fair in Rennes and talked for a moment, Elsa was actually called to another guest at the celebration after a short time.

criticism

The world found that leading actor François Cluzet was unsuitable as a lover. In the end, the film only revolves around the question of whether Elsa and Pierre get together. “Even if you don't expect much more from a romance, what little is then implemented in a realistic and irrelevant way. Director Lisa Azuelos plays with the light to visualize drama or particularly strong feelings when the dialogues get too thin. ”“ The turmoil of feelings remains a pale affair, ”said the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and criticized, among other things,“ the elderly morality of the History ”and“ the simplicity of the soundtrack [and] the script ”. “The beguiling leading actors also put the audience into a frenzy of the senses, but the trivial images cause disillusionment,” summarized Cinema .

The Tagesspiegel praised the film as a "lively ..., light ..., in the best sense of the French ... comedy that couldn't be more romantic and perhaps for that reason has a melancholy note." Deutschlandfunk also found that the film was "very good cinema entertainment [ is]. This is pretty much the best that is currently possible in auteur cinema: In times of wellness films like Monsieur Claude and Pretty Best Friends , who pretend they are art, even though they are only shallow patters, this is a ray of hope.
