Monsieur Claude and his daughters (original title: Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu , German : What have we done to God? ) Is a French film comedy of the director and screenwriter Philippe de Chauveron from the year 2014 .
action
Claude and Marie Verneuil from Chinon are the proud parents of four adult daughters. To the chagrin of Claude, a notary and avowed conservative Gaullist , three of his daughters do not marry Catholic French. The eldest daughter Odile is in a relationship with the unsuccessful Jewish businessman David, Isabelle is married to the Algerian-born Muslim lawyer Rachid, and Ségolène is the wife of the Chinese-born banker Chao Ling. Claude's last hope of having a son-in-law of his standing now rests on the youngest daughter Laure. Whenever family celebrations are pending, the Verneuils overcome their prejudices against their sons-in-law, for example on the occasion of the circumcision of Claude's grandson Benjamin. The sons-in-law also harbor prejudices against each other.
Peace only seems to return when Claude and Marie invite their daughters and sons-in-law to spend Christmas together on their property. There the father-in-law apologizes, which also brings David, Rachid and Chao together. After all, they even accompany the family to the Catholic mass.
Shortly before leaving, the fourth daughter Laure reveals to her parents that she intends to marry a Catholic actor named Charles. Claude and Marie's initial joy gives way to horror when the future son-in-law turns out to be black from Ivory Coast . As Claude's sons-in-law fear a new quarrel, they try to thwart the marriage by shadowing Charles and taking compromising pictures with a black woman, who is, however, his sister Viviane. When Marie overcomes her prejudices and takes an active part in the wedding preparations, Claude threatens to divorce, which causes Laure's sisters to be extremely upset.
Laures future father-in-law André turns out to be a counterpart to Claude. The former officer is full of prejudices against whites in general and the former French colonial masters in particular. He demonstratively arrives, who usually wears a suit, dressed in traditional African boubou . Together with Claude he tries to prevent the wedding. During a fishing trip the day before the wedding, Claude and André celebrate the catch of a big fish in a restaurant with a bottle of Calvados and begin to respect each other. Finally, the two drunks are taken into custody by the gendarmerie . Desperate Laure wants to cancel the wedding and gets on the train to Paris, but is stopped by Claude and André and taken to her Charles, who is waiting in the church.

reception
Some French newspapers printed positive reviews, e.g. B. Le Parisien , Le Journal du Dimanche , Le Nouvel Observateur , Le Point and Liberation . A reviewer of Le Figaro wrote that some passages were hilarious; others lack ease. In Germany and Austria, where the film was positively received by the audience, the press complained that the film lacks seriousness, that it “made it too easy for itself from the start” ( FAZ ) and of the “real problems of life. Pen France is nowhere to be seen in the all too well-meaning comedy ” ( Der Standard ) . There is also talk of trivialized racism: "The film is a plea for tolerance and diversity, but if you look closely, its characters spread [...] a dangerously trivialized message" ( epd film ).
