Einar Sands

Einar Sanden (until 1959 Fred Einar Ein , born September 8, 1932 in Tallinn , † April 18, 2007 in Cardiff ) was an Estonian writer and publisher.

Life

Einar Sanden went to school in Tallinn and left Estonia for Germany in 1944, where he briefly attended high school in Eckernförde after the war and moved to Wales in 1948 . After finishing school in Cardiff , he studied at the University of Economics and language and literature. In 1983 he completed his studies with an MA , in 1984 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil.

Sanden earned his living as a seaman and was extremely active in Estonian exile circles. From 1951 to 1968 he was the representative of the Union of Estonian Seafarers in England, 1975-1999 head of the Boreas publishing house . Since 1973 he lived alternately in Spain and Wales , and there after the restoration of Estonia's independence.

Sanden had been a member of the Estonian Writers 'Association in Exile since 1970 and of the Estonian Writers' Association since 1995 .

Literary work

Sanden made his debut with short stories in exile magazines and self-published his first volume of poetry in 1954. The critics qualified this volume as "immature", and his later poems were judged cautiously and found to be "simple and bumpy". Sanden was much more successful in the field of "political fiction", especially since this genre did not exist in Estonia during the Soviet era. With his various novels in the field of tension between East and West, which skillfully mix fact and fiction, he created his own genre. For example, he wrote two novels about the Estonian communist Karl Säre and his eventful fate ( We leave Tallinn at sunset , 1979, and Hearts and Stones , 1982). Estonian literary studies conclude succinctly: "As a representative of the political intelligence stream, Einar Sanden is a special figure in Estonian literature."

In old age he planned a six-volume memoir novel, of which four volumes could appear between 2001 and 2005. As the subtitle “Morning Hours” suggests, the focus is on the author's youth, because at the end of Volume 4 he is just 16 years old.
