Use in 4 walls was a docutainment series by MME Me, Myself & Eye Entertainment GmbH on the subject of living problems, which is broadcast by RTL . The producer of the series is Lars Uwe Höltich . The television production was in the program from October 2003 to 2013 and in the past was seen by an average of 26 percent of the target group of 14 to 49 year old viewers. In the following years, however , the rate fell continuously. In 2004 the show was awarded the German Television Prize in the Best Daily Show category.

Tine Wittler , Almuth Kook and Karima Ortani moderated the program as “living experts”. The planning of the respective conversions is carried out by an architecture office. The moderators take on the task of decorating.

In June 2013 it was announced that the program would be discontinued after ten years.

Until 2012, the reruns were broadcast on the pay TV channel RTL Living .

From July 2014 to April 2015, the repeats were broadcast on Super RTL on Thursdays at 8:15 p.m.

Shipment process

Use in 4 walls special

The deployment-in-4-walls team is renovating a room. To do this, the family is visited, the apartment inspected, the room in question is cleared and the apartment expert determines the sequence of work. Then the renovation and furnishing work will take place.

The resident can express wishes and make suggestions beforehand, but ultimately the production determines how the room is furnished. During the renovation, the residents will not have access to the room.

In use in 4 Walls - Special , both individual rooms and the entire house are being rebuilt and refurbished. It is suggested that the house residents live in a mobile home ("Tinemobil") during the renovation work. In fact, however, the family is usually accommodated with friends or in a hotel, as the mobile home offers little space. Cases have also become known where the renovation work took considerably longer than originally planned and the families had to accept longer evacuations. The concept of the special program was changed significantly in the spring of 2009. So now only particularly difficult cases that span two programs are shown. The start of this reformatting took place in the summer of 2008 when a completely littered house was completely renovated. In the programs in spring 2009, u. a. a completely dilapidated farm completely rebuilt and refurbished.

On October 9, 2006, the daily program was taken out of RTL's program due to its insufficient market share of less than 10 percent. The special broadcast is not affected.

Related formats are Do it Yourself - SOS ( ProSieben ) and Home in Happiness - Our move into a new life ( RTL II ) and Living as desired  - Das Haus ( VOX ).

criticism

The concept is criticized for the massive product placement , especially by IKEA . The preferred brands would be presented to the viewer as the editorially selected, best alternatives.

The term “housing expert” is also criticized. A misleading term, as it suggests that the moderator mainly deals with the planning and decoration of the property. In fact, however, she focuses on moderation; the drafts of the new interior design come from an interior designer.

Tax consequences

In January 2013 it became known that several participants in the program had to pay tax on the renovation work as a monetary benefit . In November 2015, a participating family was asked to pay almost 160,000 euros in taxes for the renovation.
