Population development in Kaiserslautern
This article shows the development of the population of Kaiserslautern in tabular form, graphically and with explanations.
Population development
In the Middle Ages and early modern times , only a few hundred people lived in Kaiserslautern. The population grew very slowly and fell again and again because of the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. As a result of the devastation in the Thirty Years' War , the population fell from 2,120 in 1611 to only 940 in 1683. It was only with the start of industrialization that a strong population growth began in Kaiserslautern. In 1800 only 3,000 people lived in the city, in 1900 there were already 48,000.
During the Second World War , the city was badly damaged by numerous Allied air raids. The population fell by 25.2 percent from 70,713 in May 1939 to 52,880 in December 1945. The post-war period was marked by the reconstruction of the city and the influx of numerous refugees and displaced persons from the German eastern regions . At the same time, the Kaiserslautern area became the largest US garrison outside the USA. The population rose to more than 87,000 by 1962.
Through the incorporation of several places on February 14 and April 10, 1969, the population of the city exceeded the limit of 100,000, making it a major city . For large cities, the assessment basis in Germany is 100,000 inhabitants. This limit was undercut in the years 1969 to 1970 and 1978 to 1991, as well as from 2000, and thus Kaiserslautern was nominally no longer a large city. On December 31, 2006, the “ official population ” for Kaiserslautern was 98,044 according to an update by the Rhineland-Palatinate State Statistical Office (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices).
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1827 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates by the city administration (until 1970) and the State Statistical Office (from 1971). From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the “resident population” and since 1987 to the “population at the location of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.
