Population development

At the beginning of the 4th century, Trier, the residence of the Roman emperors, was the largest city north of the Alps with an estimated 80,000 inhabitants. In the Middle Ages and up to the beginning of the modern era , the population sank to only 2,677 in 1697 due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. In the course of the 18th century, the population of the city grew to 8,829 in 1801. With the start of industrialization in In the 19th century, population growth accelerated. In 1900 over 43,000 people lived in the city. By 1939 this number had doubled to over 88,000.

During the Second World War , the city lost around 35 percent of its residents (30,551 people). The population sank to 57,000 in 1945. Only in the course of the incorporation of several places with a total of more than 20,000 inhabitants on June 7, 1969, the pre-war level was reached again. At the same time, the city's population exceeded 100,000, making it a major city and staying there until 1976, again exceeding the 100,000 mark in 2001. The " official population " for Trier was 103,518 on December 31, 2006 according to the state statistical office of Rhineland-Palatinate (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices).

The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Up to 1801 these are mostly estimates, then census results (¹) or official updates from the State Statistical Office. From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the location of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.

Not included in the population statistics are the members of the French armed forces stationed in Trier between 1945 and 1999 with their families. At times it was over 30,000 people.
