Ek Hota Vidushak ( Marathi एक होता विदुषक ek hotā viduṣak ) is an Indian tragicomedy by Jabbar Patel from 1992. It is set in the Tamasha milieu.

action

The film star Aburao performs the Shraddha ritual for his deceased mother Manjula in front of a large audience of onlookers and curious media representatives in his hometown . Because of his ongoing film work, he could not shave his head as usual, but had to fall back on a bald wig to keep the right appearance. After the ceremony, he drives to his mother's dilapidated house and drifts into memories of his childhood. The story of his life so far is told as a flashback .

Aburao, called Abya, is the illegitimate son of the former Tamasha dancer and celebrated Lavani singer Manjula, who only privately entertains the landowner Himmatrao Inamdar. Aburao is known for his talent for imitating voices. After Himmatrao laughed herself to death during a performance by Aburao, Manjula has to work as a Tamasha dancer again. She joins her sister Kausalya's traveling theater company with Aburao. Aburao is particularly impressed by the Songadya Nana and is growing into the world of theater, where he can also use his talent for imitation.

As an adult, Aburao fills the role of Songadya with political satire. One day his former school friend Gunwantrao, who has meanwhile become Minister of Culture in Maharashtra , visits his performance and is enthusiastic. He advises him to found his own theater company and encourages him. Some actors join Aburao in the new troupe. His girlfriend becomes the dancer Subhadra. In addition to Gunwantrao, the film actress Menaka and the director Usman will also attend the 500th performance. Enthusiastic about Aburao, they offer him a role in the film. After some hesitation, he accepts the offer and lets his team continue to work alone.

One film with Menaka becomes another and Aburao becomes part of the entertainment film industry. He only informs his mother of his marriage to Menaka in writing. He soon realizes that Menaka only married him to "show her ex-boyfriend Ravi". In Aburao she only loves his funny side that makes her laugh. On the set of his first directorial work, Aburao found out about his mother's death by telegram. This memory brings him back to the present, sitting at his mother's ruined house.

His friend Gunwantrao becomes Chief Minister and gives Aburao benefits behind the scenes. While recording a film, Aburao receives a visit from Nana, who has come with the eight-year-old girl Jai, who has never smiled in her life. She is Aburao's daughter with Subhadra, who died of tuberculosis . He has to take care of Jai from now on. First he sends her to a boarding school, but then takes her home. For them he is “Aburao from the cinema”. At the same time, Menaka leaves Aburao for Ravi.

In the upcoming by-elections , Aburao is supposed to support Gunwantrao with a campaign, but Gunwant makes him a candidate without further ado. Aburao becomes a member of parliament and takes part in polemical political speeches. When he visits, Nana holds up the mirror to him about his behavior and reminds him of his earlier principles.

Aburao suffers a heart attack while performing. Despite his illness and against the advice of the doctor, Gunwantrao insists that Aburao give a speech on his birthday. Aburao should collapse in a media-effective manner. However, he does not deliver his speech as agreed, but uses it to declare his love to his daughter Jai, who luckily smiles for the first time. On the way home, she calls him "Papa" for the first time.

Reviews

The film critic Shoma A. Chatterji sees the film as a touching story that pays homage to Tamasha as a dying art form in the face of cinema and television and at the same time a criticism of the price of a poor man's rise to fame and the accompanying loss of his values.
