Ekkhard Verchau

Ekkhard Verchau (* 1927 ) is a German historian .

Life

Verchau grew up in Salzwedel (see Salzwedel # People associated with Salzwedel ). After military service and imprisonment, he worked in agriculture and mining . He then studied history, classical philology , archeology and German in Marburg , Munich and Tübingen and conducted archival studies in London and Paris. In 1957 he submitted his dissertation to the Philosophical Faculty at the University of Tübingen and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . He then worked as a lecturer in academic adult education and from 1962 at the Institute for European History in Mainz, Department of Universal History. From 1964 to 1992 he worked at the History Department of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , Department of Modern History, most recently as Academic Director. In 1970, Verchau led an international Fontane conference and a symposium on Fontane's »Stechlin« and its film adaptation.
