Eku Wand (born Uwe Wand on October 25, 1963 in Düsseldorf ) is a German designer , media designer and multimedia director. Wand is professor for media design and multimedia at the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig with a research focus on interactive storytelling .

Life

Eku Wand studied in the 1980s at the University of the Arts, now University of the Arts , Visual Communication . After working as art director for computer animation and video production at Berlin's Cinepool, he founded the Pixelpark company with Paulus Neef in 1991 , today Publicis Pixelpark in Berlin, where he was one of the managing directors and creative director. Pixelpark was one of the first multimedia agencies in Germany in the early 1990s, Neef and Wand were later classified as "Internet pioneers".

With Pixelpark, for example, Wand realized the interactive sales promotion terminal ( kiosk system ) MusicMaster for the Karstadt department store chain , which enabled customers to access over 60,000 music and video titles via touch-sensitive screens. In 1996 the Bertelsmann Group took a stake in Pixelpark, the company changed into a stock corporation and went public in 1999, experienced economic turbulence from 2001 and today belongs to the international agency group Publicis.

Wand left Pixelpark in 1993 because the development was moving too much into a purely commercial direction and the growth of the agency was too fast and he founded the multimedia studio eku interactive, which he still operates today. Here he conceived and produced interactive new media projects, designed graphic user interfaces and websites for companies from various industries, such as Bertelsmann / Telemedia, Burda Verlag , Daimler-Benz , BVG Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe , GASAG AG , Lufthansa Informationstechnik , Victoria Insurance Company and Volkswagen AG .

As an author, director, producer and publisher, he designed and implemented edutainment - CD-ROM titles and computer games as self-published productions. Including the award-winning interactive documentary thriller “Berlin Connection”. The innovative project of a "digital scavenger hunt" combines documentary material with fiction and adventure game . Furthermore, Wand produced the interactive multimedia CD-ROM documentation "Berlin in the Underground - An interactive journey through time under Potsdamer Platz".

His most famous works include the animated visualization of poems by the Austrian poet and writer Ernst Jandl , which have been shown 130 times at film festivals and in exhibitions. Wand received awards and prizes for his media design projects at IMAGINA , Siggraph , Prix ​​Ars Electronica and Europrix.

The artistic media design and multimedia works by Eku Wand were represented at media festivals and exhibitions and exhibited permanently, including in the Center Georges-Pompidou in Paris, in the Technisches Museum Wien and in the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden.

After teaching activities and visiting professorships in Berlin ( UdK ), Zurich ( SfGZ ), Cologne ( KHM ) and Weimar ( Bauhaus University ) in the 1990s, Wand has been professor for media design / multimedia at the Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) since 2001 . Since 2007 he has been the Senate Commissioner for the German-Indonesian university contacts with the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) . Bandung has been a twin town of Braunschweig since 1960 .

From 2007 to 2014 Eku Wand headed the Institute for Media Research (IMF) at the HBK. His teaching and research interests include design thinking , interactive storytelling , narrative environments and game design, especially serious games and social media .

From 2009 to 2014, the excellence initiative for the games industry was created under the leadership of Eku Wand. In this nationwide unique cooperation, the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts and the Braunschweig / Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences and the Games Academy in Berlin and Frankfurt am Main are jointly breaking new ground in the training of computer and video game developers.

Between 2011 and 2017, Wand established the Indonesian citizens' initiative “Save Bangka Island”, which aimed to prevent iron ore mining on Bangka Island (North Sulawesi) and to preserve it as a nature reserve. Wall designed motifs, organized media appearances and orchestrated a long-term campaign in social media platforms and online media.

From 2013 to 2017, Eku Wand moved the center of his life to Indonesia and founded the social media management and marketing agency PT with a German partner. tewa international.
