Fleischmann & Strauss

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monika Fleischmann (* 1950 in Karlsruhe ) and Wolfgang Strauss (* 1951 near Nuremberg ), Fleischmann & Strauss for short , are a German artist and scientist couple who have focused on new media / digital media as a connection between art and technology since 1987 Mixed reality deals. With their internationally exhibited interactive productions, they are considered pioneers of media art .

Life

Monika Fleischmann grew up in Donaueschingen as the daughter of the director of a cooperative that emerged from her mother's flower dynasty . After training as a fashion designer in Zurich, she studied fine arts and acting at the Berlin University of the Arts .

Wolfgang Strauss grew up in a missionary family. After an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker, he studied architecture at the Berlin University of the Arts, where he later taught as a visiting professor.

Since 1987, Fleischmann & Strauss have been working together in the field of art and computer-mediated communication as a new cultural technique and artistic-scientific basic research with a focus on visualization , sonification and interface, initially at ART + COM , since 1997 also under the acronym MARS (Media Arts Research Studies) at GMD and Fraunhofer research institutions. Since the beginning of their artistic-scientific activity they have been concerned with the computer as a tool and medium. With their work, they have made a decisive contribution to shaping digital media and interactive media art . Her best-known artistic virtual reality and mixed reality installations include “Berlin - Cyber City” (1989), “Home of the Brain” (1990–92), “Liquid Views” (1992/93), “Rigid Waves "(1993)," Energie-Passagen "(2004) or the" Medienfluss "installation (2006), which the Netzspannung.org media art archive represents in streams of images and text with keywords.

In 1988 Monika Fleischmann and Wolfgang Strauss founded the first German research laboratory for art and technology ART + COM in Berlin together with Edouard Bannwart, Wolfgang Krüger, Joachim Sauter , Dirk Lüsebrink and other architects, artists, designers, physicists and hackers, where they managed the “Raumlabor “From 1988 to 1992. The aim was to research the computer medium in the fields of architecture, art, design and scientific visualization.

At the same time, they founded the “La Première Rue” association in 1990 to reconstruct the Première Rue in Le Corbusier'sUnité d'Habitation ” in Briey-en-Forêt with 24 maisonette apartments and studios together with architects such as Pascal Schöning, Fritz and Lukas Schwarz, Hans Kolhoff and philosophers like Herbert Lachmayr. As guest artist of the association, Peter Doig painted one of his most famous pictures of the Cité radieuse de Briey-en-Forêt.

In 1992/93, Fleischmann & Strauss were fellows at the Art Academy for Media in Cologne and visiting scholars at the GMD Research Center for Information Technology in Sankt Augustin . After the death of Wolfgang Krüger, Fleischmann continued the GMD research group VizWiz, in which the Responsive Workbench is significantly developed as a further development of the interactive table real-time installation "Berlin, Cyber City" by Fleischmann & Strauss. Fleischmann later founded and headed the MARS department - Media Arts & Research Studies at the GMD Institute for Media Communication and the eCulture department at the Fraunhofer Research Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS). Strauss took on visiting professorships for digital media and media art in Saarbrücken, Kassel and Siegen. Fleischmann taught in Zurich, Basel, Krems, Siegen and as an honorary professor in Bremen.

From 1997 to 2014 both headed the artistic-scientific research on human-computer interaction at the MARS Exploratory Media Lab at the former GMD Institute for Media Communication - later under the umbrella of the Fraunhofer Society . In interdisciplinary teams, influential, artistic-scientific projects such as the online media art platform "netzspannung.org" and its "Knowledge Discovery Tools" as well as "Interfaces for the body" such as the bio-sensory interface PointScreen for contactless interaction were created. Fleischmann initiated the Digital Sparks Award as a talent scout to promote the next generation of artists and to map teaching at German-speaking universities . In numerous EU and BMBF- funded research projects, Fleischmann & Strauss designed and implemented new scientific instruments in the fields of architecture , media art , media informatics and new media . They understood digital art as a means of expanding space - to a mixed reality . Using the concept of interactivity , they investigated digital staging as an expression of content, form and narrative using digital means. They considered the interface, the user interface , as an evocative information object and the interaction or the interaction design as a process of a thought movement.

Fleischmann & Strauss have lived in Berlin and Gargnano since 2014 and conduct research as independent research artists.

In 2018 they received the ACM SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in Digital Art for their artistic life's work and were accepted into the SIGGRAPH Academy. The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) of the Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques Conference (SIGGRAPH) is the research network for the development of computer graphics and interactive media and forms the world's largest community of researchers, artists, developers, filmmakers and scientists, who have contributed to the development of new technologies.
