Elba is a town in Genesee County in the US state of New York . At the time of the United States Census 2010 , the Town of Elba had 2370 inhabitants. It is on the northern border of the county and north of the City of Batavia . The Village of Elba is located near the center of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of ​​92.44 km 2 , 92.33 km 2 of which is land.

The northern border of Elba is the border to Orleans County with the Town of Barre .

Part of the Alabama Swamp is in the northwest corner of the town through which Oak Orchard Creek flows.

The New York State Route 98 , which runs in south-north direction, and the east-west connection NY-262 cross in the Village of Elba .

The Torrey Farms , one of the largest farm operations in New York, located in the Town of Elba.

In the Town of Elba are also:

  • East Elba - a hamlet on Norton Road in the southeast corner of the town.
  • Elba - the Village of Elba is on NY-98.
  • Davis Corners - a settlement in the southern part of the town.
  • Daws (also "Daws Corners") - south of the Village of Elba on NY-98 and the southern city limits.
  • Five Corners - a hamlet south of East Elba on the city limits.
  • Langton Corners - a settlement north of the Village on Oak Orchard Road.

history

The area was first settled by whites in 1803. The Town of Elba was founded in 1820, with the area being separated from the then Town of Batavia . In 1842 part of Elba was used to establish the Town of Oakfield .

In 1884 the Elba settlement separated from the town and incorporated as a village.

There were once three mines in Elba, which were operated from 1788.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Elba was inhabited by 2,439 people. The population density was 26.4 people per km 2 . There were 910 housing units, an average of 9.8 per km 2 . The population in Elba consisted of 93.07% of White , 1.72% Black or African American , 0.49% Native American , 0.08% Asian , 0% Pacific Islander , 3.90% said other races to belong and 0.74% named two or more races. 5.25% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The residents of Elba were distributed to 853 households out of which 36.1% were living in children under 18 years. 65.4% of households were married, 9.1% had a female head of the household without a husband and 21.6% were not families. 16.8% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 8.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.18.

The population was divided into 27.7% minors, 7.7% 18–24 year olds, 30.2% 25–44 year olds, 23.3% 45–64 year olds and 11.2% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were 102.2 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 94.9 men.

The median household income in Elba was 46,161 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 51,058 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 37,244, compared to $ 24,688 for women. The per capita income was $ 18,470. 6.5% of the population and 5.9% of families had an income below the poverty line , of which 10.4% of minors and 4.8% of those aged 65 and over were affected.
