1915: Outsourcing of the place Batavia (City)

Town and City Batavia are, like the whole of Genesee County, in a landscape characterized by glaciers and the Lake Tonawanda meltwater lake of the last glacial period ( Wisconsin Glaciation ). The local area is therefore largely flat; the bottom sandy. The largest watercourse is the Tonawanda Creek , which comes from the south into the city of Batavia and from there flows west to the Niagara River , about 55 km away .

The town of Batavia is about halfway between Buffalo at the northeastern end of Lake Erie and Rochester .

There are no villages and census-designated places in the area of the town . The largest contiguous settlements are the hamlets of Bushville, Five Corners and West Batavia. Batavia is an enclave in the eastern half of the town.

The neighboring towns are Oakfield and Elba in the north, Stafford in the east, Alexander and Bethany in the south and Pembroke in the west. All neighboring towns are also in Genesee County.

history

From 1793 the Holland Land Company sold almost all of the land west of the Genesee River in New York State to European settlers. After this region initially belonged to Ontario County , in 1802 the entire area taken over by the Holland Land Company was combined in the new Genesee County. A further nine counties were split off from the area of this county in the following 40 years. The county seat of Genesee County was Batavia, first mentioned in 1798 .

At the same time, a town Batavia was founded as a further administrative level in 1802 , including the town of Batavia. From April 23, 1823, this was legally managed as a village . In 1915, the federal state granted the town of Batavia city rights and administrative independence from the town of the same name.

The area of the town of Batavia was reduced several times by splitting off other towns: in 1812 with the elevation of the towns of Alexander, Bethany and Pembroke and in 1820 when the towns of Elba and Stafford were founded.

In 1972, the main campus of the Genesee Community College , founded in 1966, was opened on the area of the town northeast of Batavia . Around 5,500 students complete a two-year training course there.
