Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB is the fifth short film by screenwriter, producer and director George Lucas and was produced in 1967 while Lucas was assistant to seminar leader Gene Peterson at the University of Southern California .
The subject of the fifteen-minute science fiction short film was related to a widespread fear of the loss of identity of the individual through an engineered and centralized society, as portrayed in George Orwell's novel 1984 . Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB also deals with the question of a person's free will.
With the help of Francis Ford Coppola and his film production company American Zoetrope , the THX 1138 , Lucas' first full-length film , was made in 1971 on the basis of this short film. It was also the first feature film production by the then young film company American Zoetrope. In 2010 the short film was included in the National Film Registry as an American film that is particularly worthy of preservation .

Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB plays on May 14, 2187 and starts at 2:43:38. Citizen THX 1138 (Don Natchsheim) is found guilty of a crime known as Sexacte by a technology society . His partner YYO 7117 (Joy Carmichael) is interrogated and denies having ever loved him. An off-voice speaks the words:
I understand, I understand.
“ I understand, I understand. "
In the seemingly endless corridors of the labyrinthine city, THX 1138 tries to escape from his impending punishment. Rigid employees guard numerous images that are brought in from unknown corridors. A sepia-colored photo shows the god of this culture; a bearded man with the number 0000 on his forehead.
THX 1138 enters an elevator and a high-pitched electronic noise is heard that brings him to his knees in pain. A security guard named PERFECTBOD 2180 tries to arrest him again. THX 1138 is trapped and activates a weapon, causing a bright flash to appear and the security guard to fall to the ground.
Finally, the THX 1138 pries open a door and finally discovers daylight. As he climbs to the surface and approaches the sunset, YYO 7117 receives the following message underground:
YYO 7117, I regret to inform you that your mate THX 1138 destroyed himself at 4-5-2-3-9. All possible efforts were made by the authority to prevent this tragedy. I am truly sorry. You may obtain a new mate at Center P Lab.
“ I am sorry to inform you that your partner THX 1138 self-destructed at 4-5-2-3-9. The authorities have spared no effort to prevent this tragedy. I'm really sorry. You can get a new partner at the Center P Lab. "
