Elfriede Werthan (born July 23, 1939 in Graz ; † April 15, 2014 in Graz- Ragnitz ) was an Austrian competitive athlete , journalist and writer .

Life

Elfriede Werthan was born in Graz in 1939. She trained as a pharmacist and worked as a sports journalist for the Süd-Ost Tagespost for 25 years , then for 7 years for the Steirerkrone . She then published 10 books and also gave readings.

athletics

In May 1981 a hundred Styrian (former) athletics masters founded the "Club of Styrian Athletics Masters". Elfriede Werthan was very active in the ball and discus competition and also shaped the club of athletics masters and has always been present at the state championships in recent years, taking on the role of managing director .

music

In her contribution to the Mimi Coertse book , Werthan wrote (greatly abbreviated):

“In October 1961 I was invited to visit Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor in the Graz Opera House . With Mimi Coertse in the title role. She enchanted the Graz opera audience with her coloratura soprano , all of her performances were sold out. "

“Back then I was a competitive athlete, a shot put. Before I got ready for the opera night, I put in a tough workout in the weight chamber. The opera should be a reward. I dreamed of becoming an Olympic fighter one day . I chiseled tons of iron just to make the ball go far. The Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 were my big goal. "

“My dreams of a great career broke in 1962 due to a serious injury. In this desolation I decided to travel to Vienna for a week, to visit the State Opera every evening. The dance began with Mimi Coertse as Traviata . When I stood at the stage door, she invited me for the coming days. "

“On the way home by train I wrote down everything that I had experienced. It was interesting for the Graz opera audience what international offers and plans Mimi Coertse had. I offered my stories to newspapers, the stories were published. I eventually made writing my profession and found the fulfillment of my life. First I was a journalist for 30 years, then my path led to writing. "

The “Styrian of the Day” fulfilled a lifelong dream: with the proceeds from her last two books, around € 15,000, she supported the performances of the “Black Tie Ensemble” in Styria. This enabled the concert in the Graz Landhaushof , at which the young singers from South Africa , led by Kammersängerin Mimi Coertse, sang "arias from the world of opera".

Elfriede Werthan was a long-time member of Sports Media Austria . She died in Graz shortly before the age of 75.
