Elisabeth Seiler (born December 31, 1889 in Stuttgart ; † May 3, 1974 in Bad Liebenzell ) was a German missionary sister , a missionary in China and an author for over 20 years .

Live and act

At the age of nine, Elisabeth Seiler already had a burning desire to go into missionary work. She read enthusiastically the biography of Georg Müller , the "orphan father of Bristol". When she was seventeen she found her faith . Her sister, seven years younger than her, died that year, followed by her mother shortly afterwards. In October 1916 she joined the sisterhood of the Liebenzeller Mission . After graduating from Bible school , from 1919 to 1923 she did a community internship in the Evangelical Chapel Congregation in Heidelberg's old town. In December 1923 she was able to leave for China. Once there, she first learned the Chinese language in Yangshuo . From there she traveled on to Yuanchow, in Hunan Province , where she worked in an orphanage that housed 260 boys and at a girls' school with up to 50 students. In 1931 she was able to spend her vacation in her home country, from which she returned in 1932. In 1941 she was already on her way to her second home stay at the Sino-Russian border when the outbreak of war prevented her from continuing to travel via Russia. However, she was able to work temporarily in Tsingtau and continue her journey in 1946. After her arrival in Germany she started giving lectures about her travel and service experiences, which took her to Austria and Switzerland.

She published her service experiences from 1923 to 1951 in three books under The Experiences of a China Missionary , which Erich Mauerhofer wrote from tape recordings she made.

Elisabeth Seiler last lived in Unteröwisheim before she retired in 1964 in the nursing home of her sisterhood in Bad Liebenzell .
