Elisabeth Walter (born June 19, 1897 in Kippenheimweiler, today the city of Lahr , † June 4, 1956 in Konstanz ) was a German teacher and writer .

After her birth in Lahr-Kippenheimweiler, she grew up in Friesenheim-Oberweier . After finishing school she became a teacher and from 1922 taught at schools in Bühlertal-Obertal , Meßstetten-Heinstetten , Friedenweiler - Rötenbach , Hänner , Freiburg- Betzenhausen and in Weilheim-Dietlingen . After being transferred to Salem in 1949, she was released from school prematurely for health reasons. She died in Konstanz at the age of 58. In Freiburg im Breisgau and Neckargemünd streets are named after Elisabeth Walter.

The adventurous journey of little Schmiedledick with the gypsies , first published in 1930, is Elisabeth Walter's most successful children's book. It tells the story of the Hotzenwald rascal Schmiedledick, kidnapped by the gypsies, who experiences a completely different perspective in his new life than the one he is used to before. The described framework of the journey with the gypsies in their horse-drawn carriage is no longer considered politically correct today . As a Sunday child, Schmiedledick is supposed to redeem the popping spirit of the Hohenkrähen for the gypsies . Although he has the opportunity to return home very soon, he decides to stay with the gypsies. The hard and hard life of his new family is portrayed realistically. The environment regards him as a gypsy child and treats him as such. The book is also a local history tour through Baden. At their place of work, Heinstetten, there was a camp for travelers in the Heuberg military training area up to the Porajmos .

The National Socialists sensed anti-gypsy hostility in the book and tried to use Elisabeth Walter for their purposes. However, this failed them with the Catholic and deeply religious woman, but caused her inconveniences such as spying and harassment. Her book has also been removed from the Borromeo Catholic Libraries .

In the post-war period, the book was hostile to the lack of political correctness, so that the Herder publishing house no longer made any anniversary editions for the author's 100th birthday in 1997. Meanwhile there are new editions from another publisher.
