Elisabeth Werl

Elisabeth Werl (born April 7, 1898 in Annaberg , † June 28, 1983 in Dresden ) was a German church historian. She was considered one of the best experts in the history of the Saxon Reformation.

Life

Werl attended the state teacher training college in Dresden from 1915 to 1919 and then worked as a primary school teacher in Plauen and Weischlitz . From 1930 she studied history, German, French, philosophy and theology at the University of Leipzig . In 1936 she passed the state examination for higher teaching qualifications. Subsequently, in 1937, she published her dissertation on the subject of youth in Hesse and marriage at the Saxon court in Dresden as the first part of her extensive account of the Duchess Elisabeth of Saxony. This made her a Dr. phil. PhD. During this time she worked in the school service in Plauen from 1936 to 1938.

Subsequently, she was entrusted by the Saxon Commission for History as a part-time job with the continuation of the publication of files and letters on the church policy of Duke George of Saxony that Felician Gess had begun . The commission was able to extract numerous registers from your estate , which, after thorough revision and expansion, serve to continue the edition.

From 1944 she worked as a teacher for history, German and religion in Dresden, then from 1947 she worked in the church service. From 1951 she researched the Saxon church history for the church. She was considered one of the best experts in the history of the Saxon Reformation and wrote numerous works about the Wettins during the Reformation, Martin Luther , Peter von Dresden and the von Einsiedel family .

Her estate with a collection of materials on the history of the Reformation and Duke Georg von Sachsen is in the Dresden Main State Archives .
