Elisabeth von Anhalt (1563–1607), Electress of Brandenburg

Elisabeth von Anhalt (born September 15, 1563 in Zerbst ; † November 8, 1607 in Crossen ) was a princess of Anhalt and by marriage from October 6, 1577 until her husband's death on January 18, 1598, Electress of Brandenburg .

Life

Elisabeth was a daughter of Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt (1536–1585) from his first marriage to Agnes (1540–1569), daughter of Count Wolfgang I von Barby .

On October 6, 1577, Elisabeth became the third wife of Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg (1525–1598), who was almost 40 years her senior, in the Letzlingen hunting lodge . She was 16 years younger than her stepson Joachim Friedrich . The wedding was celebrated with little effort and Elisabeth received 400 guilders a year as a morning gift. Elisabeth brought 15,000 thalers into the marriage as a marriage good and received as a personal item , in addition to a considerable pension, the town and castle Crossen, the office and town of Züllichau and Bobersberg .

Elisabeth was considered a patron of the scholar Leonhard Thurneysser . After the death of her husband, already weakened by her many births, she and her younger children withdrew to their widow's residence at Schloss Crossen. She is buried in the Hohenzollern crypt of the Berlin Cathedral .
