Ellen Meiksins Wood (born April 12, 1942 in New York , † January 14, 2016 in Ottawa ) was an American Marxist historian and editor of the Monthly Review .

Life

Wood was born in New York in 1942 as the daughter of Latvian refugees and was named Ellen Meiksins. Since they were Jews and also members of the Bund , their parents were forced to leave Latvia, which was occupied by Germany. In Berkeley , Wood received a Bachelor's degree in Slavic Languages from the University of California in 1962 . She then studied political science at the University of California in Los Angeles , where she received her doctorate in 1970. From 1967–1996 she taught this subject at York University in Toronto . After she retired, she was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada . From 1984 to 1994 Wood served on the editorial board of New Left Review , from 1997 to 2000, along with Harry Magdoff and Paul Sweezy , co-editor of the Monthly Review . She was a representative of so-called political Marxism .

Most recently, Meiksins Wood wrote for the Socialist Register and Against the Current magazine .

Her first marriage was since 1968 to Neil Wood, who died in 2003. Together they published several essays in the 1970s.

In 2014 she married Ed Broadbent , the former chairman of the New Democratic Party , with whom she lived in Ottawa and London for six years until her death from complications from cancer.
