Elliott Levin

Elliott Shalom Levin (born October 23, 1953 in Philadelphia ) is an American jazz musician ( flute , saxophone ) who was also active as a poet.

Live and act

Levin grew up in Philadelphia and studied music and creative writing at the University of Oregon . He also took private lessons with Michael Guera, a former saxophonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and with Claire Polin on the flute. He first played saxophone with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes , The Sound of Philadelphia, Odean Popes ' Saxophone Choir, Tyrone Hill and Jamaaladeen Tacuma . In the 1990s he played in the ensembles of Cecil Taylor , such as Phthongas and Unit Core Ensemble ( Live in Berlin ) as well as with Alan Silva & The Sound Visions Orchestra, in the 2000s a. a. also with Don Preston , Jair-Rôhm Parker Wells , Grant Calvin Weston and Bobby Zankel . In 1997 he recorded his debut album The Motion of Emotion ( CIMP ) with Akira Andō , Dominic Duval and Denis Charles , followed by A Fine Intensity (1999), with a quartet he directed with Tyrone Hill. In the field of jazz, Tom Lord lists him with 34 recording sessions between 1978 and 2012.

Levin also worked with poets such as Miguel Algarin, Gloria Tropp, Mbali Umoja, Marty Watt and Frank Messina. Levin himself presented a number of poetry works that have also been published in magazines and anthologies such as LA Weekly, Blue Beat Jacket, The Painted Word, Po 'Fly, Vital Pulse and Poets and Prophets. Levin has received multiple awards from New American Radio in New York, The City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts, and the California Endowment for the Humanities.
