history

The name Ellwangen is probably derived from the name components Ell (elk) and Wang (sloping terrain). The fief book of Count Eberhard von Landau from 1300 assigns Ellwangen to the donation Konrad von Winterstetten-Otterswang. It later came into the possession of Habsburg , who pledged it to Waldburg-Wolfegg in the 15th century . In 1605 it came from Wolfegg to the Zeil line and in 1675 to Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach with the Waldburg inheritance.

In 1529, Waldburg established an office in Ellwangen which was administered by an ammann, and later in 1699 a judge. Tristolz, Eulental, Pfaffenried and a farm in Löhlis were listed in the inventory of the office.

Around 1432 the first inn in Ellwangen and several mills, including a sawmill and an oil mill, are recorded. Around 1650 a community blacksmith, baker, shoemaker and potter practiced their craft. There was a shield economy around 1850.

In 1938 the senior offices were dissolved and Ellwangen was assigned to the Biberach district . On October 1, 1974 Ellwangen was incorporated into Rot an der Rot.

In 2011 there were several full-time crafts and agricultural businesses in Ellwangen .
