Elmar Klinger

Elmar Klinger (born April 14, 1938 in Herzogenaurach ) is a German fundamental theologian .

Life

After graduating from high school in Bamberg, Elmar Klinger studied from 1958 to 1965 at the Philosophical-Theological University of Bamberg and at the University of Innsbruck . On June 29, 1965 he was ordained a priest in Bamberg by Archbishop Josef Schneider and then studied for two years in Munich. In 1967 he received his doctorate at the Leopold-Franzens-University in Innsbruck under Professor Engelbert Gutwenger with the dissertation suggested by Karl Rahner The Old Testament as a great historical salvation . Klinger followed Rahner to Münster. He was there in the successor of Karl Lehmann's scientific assistant at the seminar for dogmatics and the history of dogma. In 1974 he completed his habilitation with the thesis Theology - Church - History. Theoretical requirements and historical implications of ecclesiology. She laid the foundations at Melchior Cano and her change in the Enlightenment and took over a professorship at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main .

After a semester as a private lecturer in Münster, he received a call to the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg as professor of fundamental theology and comparative religious studies. From 1997 to 2002 he headed the research project partnership work of the church in Germany and Peru. 30 years of pastoral care in Cajamarca . From 1998 to 2002 he was spokesman for the Graduate School Perception of Gender Difference in Religious Symbol Systems , which was funded by the German Research Foundation. From 1993 to 1995 Klinger was dean of the theological faculty and from 1998 to 2003 he represented the faculty in the priestly council of the diocese of Würzburg. From 2004 to 2006 he was a member of the Senate of the University of Würzburg. He retired in February 2006. The Chair of Fundamental Theology at the University of Würzburg honored his many years of teaching with a ceremony on July 17, 2006. In 2013, Elmar Klinger received the Bene Merenti in gold medal from the University of Würzburg . He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg.

His theology had a formative influence on the pastoral theologian Rainer Bucher and the dogmatist Hans-Joachim Sander, among others . Translations of his works into Spanish, Portuguese and Italian attest to their effect, especially on the horizon of the theology of liberation .

After his retirement he took over the management of the DFG project Melchior Cano "De locis theologicis", which was completed in 2014 . Critical edition of the Latin text and German translation . The translation has not yet been published. Since 1993 Elmar Klinger has published the Würzburg Studies series on Fundamental Theology . He is also editor of the Mission Studies and Dialogue of Religions series with Francis Xavier D'Sa .
