Controversies and relationship to right-wing extremism

In 1998 Podgorschek thanked the right-wing extremist monthly newspaper “Aula” in a letter to the editor for her “excellent work that she is doing for our community of faith”. Also in 2009 Podgorschek appeared as a letter writer. Now he thanked the auditorium and “their editors [...] for their faithfulness”. The paper represents “a thorn in the almost synchronized Austrian media landscape”, which is much to the annoyance of the “do-gooders” who would prefer to withdraw “all non-conformist media their license to write”.

In January 2012, Podgorschek wore his army uniform at a ball of the Vienna Corporations Ring, despite a uniform ban previously imposed by the then Defense Minister Norbert Darabos . Podgorschek therefore had to pay a fine, but his appeal to the Independent Administrative Senate was rejected. In June 2018, at an AfD event in Thuringia , Podgorschek described the Austrian judiciary as “completely left-wing”, warned against the ÖVP and called for the ORF to be “neutralized” . Podgorschek's statements were described by constitutional lawyer Theo Öhlinger and political scientist Kathrin Stainer-Hämmerle as a targeted attack on democracy or a shattering of confidence in the most important institutions of parliamentary democracy. The Greens and the SPÖ Upper Austria demanded Podgorschek's resignation and brought a corresponding motion to the Upper Austrian state parliament , where it was rejected on July 5, 2018. The FPÖ MP Alexander Nerat defended Podgorschek: the statements were "pointed".
