Life

Els Peyer was born on August 14, 1899 in Schaffhausen. Her parents were Hermann von Waldkirch, director of SIG Neuhausen , and Frieda nee Schalch. After attending elementary and secondary schools in Schaffhausen and Neuhausen am Rheinfall , she did an apprenticeship as a nurse in Zurich and Glarus from 1919 to 1921 . In 1921 she married Heinrich Peyer, chemist, manufacturer and brother of the paleontologist Bernhard Peyer . Their marriage had three children.

From 1943 to 1945 she was the head of homeless assistance in Schaffhausen. She rebuilt the homeless service and was characterized by her great commitment. The homeless assistance, later called war damage welfare, consisted of around 400 employees. One of the most important events for their organization was the bombing of Schaffhausen on April 1, 1944 , where several hundred Schaffhausen residents were made homeless. At the same time, the many thousands of refugees who fled to Schaffhausen by the end of the war had to be looked after.

After her merits in helping the homeless, she was Vice President of the Swiss Confederation for Civil Protection (SBZ) for 20 years (from 1957 to 1977) and a member of the Swiss National Defense Council from 1958 to 1966 . She worked as an activist for the expansion and anchoring of civil protection in Switzerland.
