Joachim Suchting

Joachim Süchting (born March 27, 1933 in Wismar ; † November 14, 2004 in Bochum ) was a German business economist and university professor .

Life

Suchting first completed a commercial apprenticeship at Commerzbank in Essen in 1952 and then studied business administration at the University of Cologne . He then completed special training as a branch manager at Commerzbank and returned to science in 1960 to do his doctorate in 1962 . He then stayed several times for research stays in the USA until he qualified as a professor at the University of Frankfurt in 1969 .

In 1970 he was then appointed to the chair for finance and credit management at the Ruhr University in Bochum . He was the university's first banking scientist. He stayed here until his retirement in 1998. He had turned down other appointments from the Universities of Mannheim , Münster and Giessen for all years.

As the first professor to hold a chair, Süchting not only built up the young faculty , but also founded the Institute for Credit and Finance (ikf) in 1974 , which today includes around 100 banks and insurance companies. With the institute, he built a bridge between science and practice. In addition, Suchting was Scientific Director of the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management for many years . Suchting was also head of the financing working group of the Schmalenbach Society for Business Administration . He is considered the most renowned representative of German banking management. On January 27, 2000, Süchting was therefore awarded the faculty's first honorary doctorate for his achievements in research and teaching from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Essen .

As a scientist, he has earned himself a high level of recognition and a high level of awareness through a good dozen monographs , several of which have become standard works in the training of business administrators, and through an abundance of journal articles. Bank management and financial management are the titles of his two most important textbooks in German-speaking countries.

Among his students is Stephan Paul , the current holder of the Chair of Finance and Credit Management at the Ruhr University in Bochum.
